Little bird dress

Töihin palaaminen on ollut rankempaa kuin luulin. Päivän loputtua, ompeleminen ei ole ensimmäinen asia joka mieleen tulee ja tästä johtuen blogissakin on ollut hiljaista. Mutta sitten aina välillä on koko viikonloppu vapaata. Silloin pitää ottaa ilo irti ja ommella jotain.

Getting back to work has been harder than I expected. At the end of the day sewing is not the first thing that comes to mind, and for that reason it's been bit more quiet here too. But every now and then I get the whole weekend off and that's when I know I need to sew.

Rakkaus raitoihin ei taida kadota minusta koskaan. Ne ovat aina yhtä piristäviä.

Tällä kertaa vuorossa oli mekko Esikoiselle. Mekko oli ollut valmiina suunnitelmana päässäni jo vuoden, yläosan brodyyrin hintalappu sen minulle kertoi. Alaosan kangas kylläkin vaihtui matkalla leveämpään puna-valkoiseen raitaan.

I still love stripes. They always cheer me up.

This weekend it was time to make a dress for the Girl. The idea for it had been in my mind for a year or so. I know it for a fact as there was still price tag attatched to the white cotton lace fabric that I used on the top part.



Lintu on uusi lisäys. Alkuperäisessä suunnitelmassa ei sitä ollut, mutta nyt se tuo hiukan särmää muuten niin pelkistettyyn mekkoon. Lintu on valmis sabluuna, jonka ostin Sinellistä. Ihana kuva jolle varmasti on käyttöä myöhemminkin. Silloin pitää muistaa laittaa vähemmän kagasväriä, jolloin pienimmätkin yksityiskohdat pääsevät esiin.

The bird is a new addition to the plan. I quite like it and it brings a little edge to the otherwise plain dress.

Silloin vuosi sitten, kun tätä mekkoa aloin suunnittelemaan, näin Fabriinassa näitä ihania pitsivetoketjuja. Itse asiassa, tästä vetoketjusta lähti koko ajatus mekkoon. Nythän näitä saa muualtakin ja yllättävän pirteissäkin väreissä.

Vetoketju on ommeltu päälle ja aukeaa vain pitsiosion verran. Eipä sen enempää tarvitsekkaan aueta.

About a year ago, when I first started imagine what this dress could be I found these gorgeous lace zippers in Fabriina (finnish online fabric shop). Actually the whole idea came from these zippers. Now they can be found in all sorts of colours, even in some kind of funky lime green. I've got no need for those though.

Pällä se näyttää todella kivalta. Paremmalta kuin mitä olin ajatellut.

Kuvat otettu aamulla ennen koulua, joten valo ei ollut paras mahdollinen ja kissatkin päättivät tunkea itsensä kuvaan.

It looks great on. Better than I expected.

Pictures were taken in the morning before school, so the light wasn't the best and our cats just had to be in them as well.



The Chair

Sain joskus viime kesänä kaveriltani ilmaiseksi, hänen sanojensa mukaan "kissan raiskaaman ja koiran imemän" tuolin. Tuoli oli kyllä kärsinyt kynsistä ja istuin oli tummunut, mutta muuten se oli ihana - paitsi se ei pysy pystyssä ilman seinää muotonsa vuoksi.
Päällensä se oli joskus saanut isokuosisen retro kankaan, jonka alta löytyi myrkynvihreä ja kulunut alkuperäinen verhoilu. Valitettavasti alkuperäisestä tuolista ei ole kuvaa, koska se jäi vanhalle koneelle.

It was last summer when I got this 50's chair from my friend which in her words was "cat raped and dog sucked". It clearly had been loved by cats as it was full of scratches and the fabric was darker than it was suposed to be, so maybe the dog really did suck it. All I know is that it's not stable without a wall behind it and it's beautiful.
It had been re-upholstered at one point with vintage fabric dating from the 70's and underneath was the original, bottle green fabric. Unfortunately I don't have the before picture as it was on our old computer when it crashed.

Etsin sopivaa kangasta todella kauan. Mikään kuosi ei tuntunut sopivalta tai olisivat olleet liian ohuita tälläiseen työhön. Törmäsin sitten etsyssä seikkaillessani tähän Premier Printsin kuosiin ja ajattelin sen olevan melkein täydellinen, sekä suhteellisen helppo kohdistaa.

I spent hours (days and months) in search of the perfect fabric for it. The patterns I liked were either wrong material or nerve recking to get the seams right. Then I ran into this b&w print from Premier Prints - It was perfect.

En halunnut koskea puuosiin, ne kun olivat kuluneet ihan kauniisti... mitä nyt jaloista löytyy muutamia hampaanjälkiä.

I left the wood parts untouched as they had aged quite nicely - if you don't count in the theeth marks on the legs.

 Tämän eteen tuoli vuodettua verta - kirjaimellisesti. En löytänyt verhoiluneulaa, joten jouduin ompelemaan takaosan kiinni tavallisella suoralla neulalla. Sormenpäät ovat kovettumilla ja vasemmassa kädessä useampi kuin yksi neulanpisto, mutta en pystynyt lopettamaan kesken kaiken.
En ole koskaan aikaisemmin tehnyt tälläistä verhoilutyötä ja opettelin samalla kun ompelin. Jos ja kun tuoli vaatii uuden kankaan, tiedän paremmin mitä kannattaa ja ei kannata tehdä.

I shed blood for this chair - literally. I couldn't find my upholstery needle, so I had to do the back (handstistched) with a regular straight one. My fingretips are bruised and hard but I just couldn't stop sewing.
This was my first time doing this kind of upholstery project so I was learning while doing it. And now when it comes to re-upholstering the chair I know what to do do and more importantly - what not to do.

Päivä siihen meni ja nyt se on valmis uusien kissojen tuhottavaksi... Taidan ostaa kissankarkoitetta.

It took me a day and now it's ready to be molested by our two lovely cats... Maybe I should buy some cat repellent.
